Knight & Rockets Happy Holidays

NMS Knights and Rockets Happy Holidays!

Well – you all have done it!  You have almost completed the first semester!  I am so proud of the changes that you have made and the successes that you are having.  You worked hard to begin to change the culture at NMS and you are beginning to make that happen!  Changing the culture is not an overnight endeavor – it takes time and all of you have started that process!  You have begun using Kickboard and helping the students monitor their behavior!  You are giving out Knight Dollars and for those students who want to be recognized – it is a big deal!  We have read and talked about the beginning chapters of TLAC and we have some more to finish!  You are employing those techniques in your classroom as well as using the Love and Logic techniques one on one with students.  As far as instruction is concerned – there have been changes made as well – you all have your boards configured everyday with the AIM, date, and agenda each day!  Outstanding!  You are beginning to use Formative Assessment with your students so you know where you are landing the plane each day!  We are now really beginning to use the ELL strategies that you have participated in PD for!  We are seeing word walls, vocabulary strategies, listening for students answering questions in complete sentences, using sentence stems,  – we want our students to
“Sound College Bound” !!  Great work – and I look forward to what the second semester will  bring!  You all are amazing, and you deserve a very well earned Holiday break!

Action Items:

  1. Turnitin.com Survey http://goo.gl/uizVH – This survey needs to be done by next Friday before you leave.
  2. The January 12th techBYTES: Tools to Energize Learning update-I hope many of you can attend the TechBYTES PD on Saturday, January 12!  There will be lots of great classes for you to sign up for!  As we work with our roll out devices – now is  a perfect time to attend this Saturday class.  If you need PD hours for the Flex day  – you can earn them on this day!!  Check it out!
  3. I will be sending out a link to our second Survey Monkey for this year.  Please please, give me your feedback!  We can’t make things better without your feedback!

I know that this weekend was a tough one for our country and especially for us educators.  I couldn’t help put myself in the shoes of those educators in Newtown and honestly can’t bare looking at the photos of the precious kindergarten students and courageous educators who were killed on Friday.  I know everyone feels the same.  I am sure by now everyone has read the email that the district put out to all families – if we had an email address for them.  As much as I didn’t want the wrought iron fencing around the school to make us look like we are holding kids in – it is a safety precaution that is good for NMS.  I am sure the kids will be talking about it on Monday – so do your best to reassure them but not to let it consume them either.   Just as a reminder, here is the plan if you were to hear gun shots in or around the school:

1. Lock your classroom door, turn off the lights, and move the students away from the door or windows, account for your students and grab any from the hall if they are close by.
2. Notify the office
3.  Wait for all clear signal – could be me on the loud speaker, if someone comes to your door and asks to be let in – Do not open, anyone who is authorized, will have a key.
Always remember to ask anyone you see in the hall without a badge from the front office, if they need help in finding the office to check in.  If anyone is ever unresponsive to you, or rude, please don’t engage them, just find the nearest phone and call the front office to report the incident.  As you know – no emergency is ever going to be exactly as anyone planned or practiced for – so always do what you know is best and follow the plan the best you can.  If you want to wear green and white tomorrow to support Sandy Hook Elementary, please feel free to do so.

Tomorrow is also wear jeans and bring a toys for tots – so you would wear your green and white with jeans – showing support for two causes.

Monday and Tuesday are regularly scheduled days – and then we begin early release on Wednesday.  If you attended the PD on our early release day last week and stayed for dinner – remember you can leave when your work is done on Friday!  Please wait for the buses to roll!  LOl!

One more reminder:  Some of our kids are not as excited as we are about the holiday break!  Their behavior sometimes does not indicate this to you – but some of our students would rather be in school than at home!  Not all of our students are as fortunate as we are!  Just something to keep in mind!

I have to say again:  Big Congratulations to our band, orchestra, choir, and Theater Arts!  They all did an outstanding job!  I heard one of our teachers say, “I love seeing what our kids can do – only seeing them in the classroom during my content  – it is such a treat to see their talents too!”  Well said!  Thanks to Alvin, Dugan, Ed, Gina, and Susannah for the awesome performances, and to all of your faculty members who supported the performing arts teachers!  Thanks to Gail and her photographers also!

Enjoy your holiday with your family and friends!
