NMS Faculty Bulletin 1-28-2013

Knights’ Character Traits:
I really liked what that kindness poster says – this is hard for adults and even harder for kids!  As we are in the halls, lunch room, or classrooms, and you hear interactions that are not necessarily kind – this is a good conversation to have.  We may not be fond of everyone – but it is our obligation to be kind – this is an opportunity for students and adults to make NMS a place where being kind is valued – regardless.  Let’s point out to students when we see it and I commit to practicing it!  We never know what our kind words may mean to someone –

TRIPOD Survey:
The Tripod survey is the survey the SBISD began giving to the students last year.  Those of you who were here last year know that the students took the survey in one of their classes.   Last year, the teachers had the option to send an emial to the company and receive their individual results.  The results that I recieved are the overall school’s results.  I believe that the procedures will be the same again this year.  Leah is going to be the contact person for this survey and she will be getting you all the information that you will need.  I love getting this feedback, it is how I look at the Climate Survey results – it helps us grow!

ESL Best Practices
I have been in some classrooms and heard students answering in complete sentences – but this needs to be occurring in all classrooms – regardless of the subject taught.  Students can use complete sentences with an adult anywhere!  Most everyone has the sentence stems on the walls  – now we have to insist that students use them!  The TELPAS is going to begin soon – and students need to be writing in every classroom, every day!  It is very important that you plan for the use of these strategies in your plans – it will take intentional planning to change the way we deliver instruction so that we meet the needs of all our students!  Go Team NMS!

Formative Assessment
This is the other item we have focused on this year.  How do you know your students have learned what you taught them?  In order to hold the kids accountable, we have to know what they have learned!  Exit tickets and active votes are good ways to make sure you know who learned the material!

NMS Goals for 2012-2013
1.  100% of students at NMS will score a 70% or better on the STAAR exams.
2.  99% of NMS students will be in the classroom every day for the 2012-2013 school year as measured by Skyward student discipline data.
3.  Each teacher will receive a walk-through per week with written feedback on that visit.  The feedback will be discussed every two weeks during the 03′s for the 2012-2013 school year.

Culture Corner:  from the AP’s
6th grade – For the first time in a while, horseplay became an issue this week.  It is horseplay for some and not others.  Let’s help remind the students to be kind not only with our words but also our actions.

8th grade – They completed their released reading and math tests.  As we move into next week, we are going to be working on the character value for N – No Excuses!  We could start that early – and begin working on that now!   There can be no excuses!

Shout Outs:
Shout out to Steve and Lesli for completing our first released testing for this year!  There is always hard work involved in setting up the schedules, lunches, and breaks!  Thanks to everyone for the feedback – the released testing is always a great change to practice before the real thing!
Another shout out to everyone for the great job on the lock down drill!
Shout out to Lora Ringler for helping out a ton with testing!  Snaps to you Lora!
