NMS Faculty Bulletin 3-4-2013

The KNIGHT Value this month is Integrity – We do what we say we will do.  We honor our promises and commitments.  We are honest.  How do we behave when no one is watching?

NMS Goals for 2012-2013
1.  100% of students at NMS will score a 70% or better on the STAAR exams.
2.  99% of NMS students will be in the classroom every day for the 2012-2013 school year as measured by Skyward student discipline data.
3.  Each teacher will receive a walk-through per week with written feedback on that visit.  The feedback will be discussed every two weeks during the 03′s for the 2012-2013 school year.

NMS Focus – This school year we have focused on formative assessment – landing the plane where we intended to land it.  ELL strategies – are we using the strategies that will help our second language learners understand and learn your content?  These can’t be optional  to use in our classes – we are obligated to reach all of our learners.  I am very proud of those teachers who have commited to using the strategies each and every class period.

Thanks to everyone for your enthusiasm and participation in our shared PD on Wednesday with Yes Prep.  I know that you all appreciate having options and we hope to make this the standard. I think everyone that attended the Routines and Procedures really learned a lot  – so we hope to offer this one again.  Props to all of the presenters, they were great!!

We are done with released testing!  It is now time to take that data, assess what our students know and what they need to be retaught.  We have goals to meet and AYP to meet as well.  The state has done us a favor by making standards of passing less than 70.  NMS’s goal is for our students to pass with a 70%.  Remember – the final goal is for our students to obtain some type of post secondary education.  The STAAR test is just a small stepping stone for them on their pathway to post secondary education.  We must aim higher than the STAAR.  Science had a full day of planning and data on Friday and I have created a tentative schedule for this week.  There are still some things that have to fall into place – so I am including it here -but until everyone gets the go-ahead – I don’t want anyone calling for subs yet.
Here is the tentative schedule:

6th and 7th grade ELA 1/2 Wed PM
6th and 7th grade Math 1/2 Wed AM
8th grade SS Tuesday, 7th period through planning in B117
More to come…..

Shout Outs….
A Big Shout out to MInga and the parents for the hot dogs and chili pies on Wednesday!  Snap snap!
Snaps to all of the presenters on Wednesday!
Snaps to 6th grade teachers on Friday who let me bring in about 15 visitors to their classrooms
Snaps to Steve and Lesli for organizing the released testing!

Remember – all students should have their library books in every classroom!  Let’s promote reading – assign yourself when you are done with your work!!  Read a book!

The administrators are now giving detentions to students who we see with their shirts untucked or the wrong jacket.  Those seem to be the most repeated infraction – these detentions are bright orange.  If a student comes late to class – this should be their pass.  If they are very late – an adminstrator will walk them.  If we see a whole bunch it might be past the bell.  They don’t get a detention for being late if they have the orange pass.  It will have a period circled – so they can’t use it all day!  Please ask if you have any questions!  Thanks
