NMS Faculty Bulletin 3-18-2013

Value of the month:  INTEGRITY
I hope you can find micro-moments during your day to point out integrity, examples by students or you!  These values can be taught – we have to seek out the examples and show them to kids!

NMS Goals for 2012-2013
1.  100% of students at NMS will score a 70% or better on the STAAR exams.
2.  99% of NMS students will be in the classroom every day for the 2012-2013 school year as measured by Skyward student discipline data.
3.  Each teacher will receive a walk-through per week with written feedback on that visit.  The feedback will be discussed every two weeks during the 03′s for the 2012-2013 school year.

TELPAS – We begin TELPAS testing this week on Wednesday.  Remember – the library will be closed until we complete testing.  We anticipate testing to be complete sometime next week.

SLANT – All classes should be using SLANT!  When everyone is on the same page – the students know what is expected of them in each classroom!  Please be sure you are using the term SLANT and the kids will know it is expected in each and every class!

Routines and Procedures – I know that many of you have refined and redone your Routines and Procedures and you plan on putting them in place tomorrow – Monday!  This is a great day to tighten up your expectations for kids!  I heard many of you say you were going to start using  many of the ideas that Deion shared during our PD.  I can’t wait to see!  I sent out the power point that Deion used, let me know if you need any help or feedback!

Last faculty meeting we looked at our released scores to determine where we would fall on this year’s standards, and then on to the next set of standards.  We have 2 full weeks of instruction before 7th and 8th grade give their first round of STAAR testing.  It is critical that every moment be spent on instruction.  Now would be the time where test Prep be brought in to the lessons as well.  2 weeks before a test is an appropriate time to prepare students for how the test is going to look.  I know that you all have TEKS left to teach – so use all of your time wisely!  Remember – even though the state has lowered the standards – NMS’s goal is all students at 70%.  That is your goal.

Quotes – The quotes on the walls are complete and look great!  Anytime it is applicable – please discuss them with your classes!  They aren’t just decoration – we want to talk about them and have students know what they are reading!  We will touch on them during Town Hall as well.  Thank you.

Just a reminder – all students should have their library books with them in all of their classes.  You can always use Knight dollars to reward students who have their books with them!

Community NIght – Thursday, March 21, 2013
This week is Community Night!  Remember – it is the expectation that all staff members attend!  Thank you in advance for making sure you can be there!

Culture Corner:
6th grade:  6th grade is focusing on the count down to STAAR with 21 school days until testing.  We are pushing hard in the classroom and focusing on making every minute count.

7th grade:  Spring Break has hopefully settled the 7th grade craziness and we can get back to being Knight Scholars.  Teachers hold on to those salt shakers tight as the kids try and sling them off the table.  Keep putting them back where you want them to reside – our 7th graders will finally get the hint that you are th ekeeper of your shaker, not them!  Keep using those TLAC techniques and SMILE like nothing bothers you.  You guys are the best and NMS is fortunate to have all of you here ‘Every Day, Every Knight’ teaching our babies to become ‘Smarter and Stronger’!

8th grade:
William Diaz exemplified the value of integrity when he stepped in to help Minga with two students who were arguing.
