NMS Faculty Bulletin 3-26-2013

NMS Knight Value – Integrity   We do what we say we will do.  We honor our promises and commitments.  We are honest.Keep looking for those micro-moments when you see kids working with integrity!  Values are important – Grit, Zest, and Self-control are more predictive of success than IQ.  Something to think about!

TELPAS – we are still TELPAS testing – should be done with the large bulk by the end of the day today!  We will continue to test until all the absences are caught up.

SLANT – All classes should be using SLANT!  When everyone is on the same page – the students know what is expected of them in each classroom!  Please be sure you are using the term SLANT and the kids will know it is expected in each and every class!

ELL Strategies – Look what TLAC says about speaking in complete sentences:     “The complete sentence is the battering ram that knocks down the door to college.  The essays required to enter college (and every paper written once there) demand fluent syntax.  Conversations with potential employers require subject-verb agreement. “

Community Night – I want to thank all of you who participated in community night!  Even if you spoke with only a few parents – it is a few more than you would have spoken with!  Parent/Teacher communication is critical to the success of our kids!  Thanks again!

Wednesday Grade Level Meetings – Wednesday morning – we will hold all grade level meetings.  All kids will go to the old gym for advisory.  Here is where the grade levels will meet:
6th grade:  Lindsey’s room 4B
7th grade: Crystal’s room 1B
8th grade:  Seelbach’s room 9E

Culture Corner:
6th grade: This past week was a great week! On Monday 6th grade started heading down the home stretch for STAAR. Teachers  are working hard and the kids are very focused.  Tuesday the kids saw a fantastic speaker from the show storm chasers. They asked amazing questions and at the end, the speaker remarked that this was one of the best audiences he had ever had!!!  Go 6th grade!!! We rounded out the week with a joint knights/rockets townhall that was fun and informative.

7th grade:  Saturday was exceptional!! Jose Franco, Crystal Toledo, Edward Canales, Stephen Torres, and Gabriel Guillen were among just a few that came and helped change the look of NMS! My favorite quote came true in these faces!! Thanks to everyone that came and helped make our school a better place.

8th grade:  Classes I have been in have been showing integrity by sticking to the task and working through test prep.

STAAR testing – begins next week!  We have 7th grade writing for two days, and 8th grade reading and math for two days.  6th grade will run their regular schedule.  We will need to have the building quiet.  The 7th and 8th graders are ready to show what they know!  They have worked hard, and teachers have prepared them to shine!  I know they will do so!
