NMS Faculty Bulletin 4-30-2013

We finish what we start despite obstacles and try very hard even after experiencing failure.  We work independently with focus, persistence, and resilience.

This is a perfect time of the year for our Knight Value – Grit to be in the focus!  First of all – some of the STAAR testing is complete and kids begin to think school is out.  We have to show our grit by keeping our classrooms focused and happy places where learning is taking place.  We also have 99 8th grade students in math and 77 8th grade students in reading who have to retake their STAAR test in 10 school days.  We have about 15 adults in the building helping us intervene with these kids in order to prepare them to pass the STAAR.  As you can imagine – the students are feeling low about this – so we are going to push them hard to make progress and attack what needs to be done.  Many of these kids only missed by 1 and even more missed by less than 5!  This task is doable and the students and teachers are going to show grit and make this happen. The district’s goal of T-2-4 is part of our goal of 100% of our students scoring a 70% or better on this STAAR test.  The passing rate this year is lower than a 70 – we do want 100% of our students passing this test.  We get a second chance in 8th grade – we are going to model grit and perserverance for our kids!  They can do it!   This intervention will take place in the upper library.  Here is the schedule:

8:30-Advisory as usual
9-12  ELA intervention- Upper library and  4 groups of math intervention- Parent Center
12-1 Students return to class (it’s going to be midway through class) and go to lunch at 12:30
1-3:30 Math Intervention – upper library

This begins tomorrow and will occur every day through May 13.
Wednesday is an early release day – the schedule will look a little different.  I sent an email – but I am putting here also:

8:30-11:13 ELA Intervention
11:18-11:56 Math Intervention
12:00-12:38 Lunch – All 8th grade lunch
12:42-2:00 Continued Math Intervention
2:00 Dismissal

AP Culture Corner:
6th grade – Now that we have completed Staar testing- 6th grade is continuing to buckle down and work hard until the end of the year. Tutoring is in full swing to help students who are in danger of failing for the year. We are also going to be focusing on our last two knight values and  helping  prepare our kids  for 7th grade.
