NMS Faculty Bulletin 5-13-2013

This week will be a great opportunity for our 8th grade students to demonstrate their grit as they plow through the STAAR testing for the 2nd time.  Many of them can do this – it is a confidence issue, some of them are our ELL kids and they really struggle with vocabulary.  I had the priviledge of working with a group of kids for the reading test.  Getting to work with the kids in a small group was a very positive learning experience for several reasons.  I got to hear everyone read multiple times.  Listening to some of them read was eye opening.  Working in the small groups gave me an opportunity to get to know kids in a very short time and a more intimate setting.  I could see that the students were much more engaged and participated more in the small group than they do in the classroom of 20-25.  I could hear their thinking and correct misconceptions must quicker!  It was a very positive learning experience for the kids and me!  It will be our number one goal next year:  To set up small groups in all classrooms and to create the routines and procedures so these groups run smoothly and productively while you are working with them.  Remember – testing days this week are Tuesday and Wednesday.  Please remind your students to be quiet in the hallways, even if your classroom is downstairs!  We want to provide the best testing environment possible!  Our kids will need to be super gritty and stick with this test in order to pass and do their best!

8th grade teachers:  Yes Prep is testing on Thursday and Friday of this week.  We will rope off their area as we have done in the past.  While you are on duty in the hallways, will you help make sure our students do not go past that area?  Thanks!

AP’s Culture Corner:
7th grade:  Culture: big shout out and props to all the 7th grade  teachers for all the help they have given me during interventions.

There are not too many weeks of school left.  Now is the time all adults must be a presence in the halls.  It is all of our responsibility to make sure our kids are safe and passing period is a very important time!  As many of you as possible need to step into the hallways during every passing period.  To keep the end of the year as smooth and calm as possible, it is important that all teachers continue to teach their content up and until you begin to prepare for finals.  We should not be showing movies to kids at this time.  There is plenty of curriculum left to teach and we need to use every moment.   Thank you for your support and help in keeping our kids safe and focused through the end of the year.

We have a schedule change this Friday for the Faculty v. Student Basketball game on Friday.  Tracey put the schedule out last Friday – be sure you check it!

Friday after school everyone is invited to come on down to the cafeteria and help us decorate for the 8th grade dance!  For those of you who are new to NMS – it is amazing what the art teachers do and how they turn our cafeteria into a magical place for the 8th graders!  Even if you can only stay for a little while – we would love the help, and it is fun! Usually we have some kind of snack and take breaks to eat!   I look forward to seeing many of you!!  Our fearless decorating leaders Stephanie and Katie will have jobs for everyone that shows up!!

Be sure you say a big CONGRATULATIONS to Stephanie for her 2nd place win in the Youth Art Car Parade!  I know many of you glued a couple of beads or pulled apart a couple of necklaces helping her prepare for the parade! Some of you all did a lot of glueing! Stephanie, her family, and the kids worked hard, showed their grit, and produced an amazing Art Car! The car is gorgeous!!  Check it out:
