As we talked in last Wednesday’s faculty meeting – we are going to Simplify!  We have one major focus this spring and that is Meeting the Needs of our Students in order to move the needle on Achievement.  We are focusing on students, data, and small group instruction.  03’s will be held in teacher’s classrooms – please keep your trackers up to date – that is the “knowing your students” piece.  Using the data to work with the students in small groups is the “Meeting their needs” piece.  The literacy strategies/ELL strategies are the instruction used during the small group time.  Task = Performance!  This is what we will focus on and do between now and April and May.  Teachers will meet with their Accountability buddy or group to make sure we are all focusing on student achievement and growth!  We are going to help each other keep the main thing – the main thing!  This team is strong – and I know we can do this!  You all have important work to do!!  You can do it!

Speaking of important work – We have a message to send to our students each day.  Research shows that students want to feel capable, connected, and they want to know they count!  As we work with the students of NMS – we want to help them become more gritty and able to stick with the learning longer!  In everything you do with your kids in the classroom – you need to communicate these 3 ideas to your kids:

This work is important!
You can do it!
I won’t give up on you!

This must be our message – subtle and not so subtle!  Just saying it is great!  When any human knows that they are important and someone believes in them – they will stick with the task longer!  It is true for all of us!  We are on a tipping point at NMS – let’s make it happen for our kids!  We have to be super gritty also!

Just an FYI – I will meet with the Senior Staff next week to discuss moving NMS’s start time to either 8:45 with a 15 minute advisory, or 9:00 start time without advisory.  Either way, school would be out at 4:00 pm.  Teachers hours would be 8-4.  This would allow NMS students and YES Prep students to dismiss at the same time – and then after school practices could all begin at 4:00.  This alignment is better for everyone!  For those of you who like to get here early – your work would be done and you could leave at 4:00 with the students.

It is that time of year!  Teacher of the Year time!  Please think about who you would like to nominate, then ask that person if they are ok and would like to be nominated, and then send that name to me, if you are given the go ahead.  Iwill  need all nominations by this Friday, Jan. 24, 2014.  We will vote for NMS’s TOY next Monday, Jan. 27, 2014.   Let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks all!
