The Knights’ News 9-29-2014

Know our Kids, Meet their Needs, Up the Mountain to T-2-4!

Thanks for a great week last week!  This week we make the turn into October!  We are definitely making the 20 mile march as we  do the right things for kids!  Making every moment, every day,  in your classroom be of importance.  Creating a sense of urgency will propel your students where you want them to go!

school wide focus

Our focus is Literacy – that includes all of the ELL strategies that create the opportunities for our LEP students to learn our content, and the academic language needed to be successful in school.  Your department chair is going to share with you an ELL checklist that we are going to put into place each week!  It will be  feedback on strategies used so we can make sure we are doing what has to be done to move the needle for our learners.

ELL Strategies: School-wide Focus – Literacy

  1. Randomization when calling on students – Don’t call on students with hands raised.  You have to train kids and yourself not to call on these students.
  2. Visuals, pointing and gesturing
  3. safe/low risk environment
  4. Structured table talk, Elbow partner talk, structured stems
  5. not having students translate for others Remember to these are simple to implement and can get very big results!  These are all on the ELL strategy checklistRemember to CHAMP out all of your activities and transitions in your classroom.  When I see teachers do this in the classroom – the rooms are running very smoothly!  Students know what is expected of them and most importantly they are receiving feedback on how they are doing!  This is the most important part of what you do in the classroom – without management – there can be no learning!

Shout outs!Shout out to Elizabeth Clark for working with her newcomers and making great progress! Snaps to you!
Shout out to the ELA department for attending a PD and putting the learning in place immediately!  Snap, Snap!
Shout out to all the staff for making Open House a success!
