The Knights’ News 10-26-2014

Know our Kids, Meet their Needs, Up the Mountain to T-2-4!

All core classrooms should now have a word wall up!  Pieces came together this week as we looked at the failure lists, looked at the grading guidelines, and examined the teaching strategies and use of LEP strategies so that LEP students are able to learn the content in all classes.  Our students who are designated Beg., Int., Adv. or Adv. High, can not learn our content if we only present it the way we would for native English speakers.  We are required by law to present our instruction in a way that will make the content comprehensible for our students.  There were over 20 Beginners failing at least one course.  You all heard the statistics for your grade level – so you can imagine that the numbers increased if we looked at the grades of the whole school. The great news about this is this:  As we learn and implement the LEP strategies on a daily basis during all of the classes – we are going to see the learning improve, grades improve, STAAR scores improve, and our students engagement in school improve.  The obligation rests upon us to instruct our kids in ways that research proves students will learn the best.

Community Night – All staff members are expected to attend Community Night.  This is a great opportunity to visit with students and their parents.  Throughout this week, talk it up to your students, they can earn money if their parent attends.  For those students whose parents you really need to talk to – LiveSchool bribery is a good option.  Minga and the PTA will have nachos and cookies in the lounge by the cafeteria beginning at 4:00.  Thanks PTA!

The first semester will be over before we know it!  Please continue to work with your students with a sense of urgency because we have limited time with our kids and once we get to Thanksgiving – time goes by quickly!  The October slump is almost over!  You all are working hard and doing amazing and important work!  I am proud to work with each of you!
