The Knight’s News 11-10-2014

Know Our Kids, Meet their Needs, Up the Mountain to T-2-4!

I hope all of you got the message on Friday – that the students at NMS think you all are the bomb!  The consistent message is that the NMS teachers support the kids at every turn!  That was consistently what they said they liked about NMS!  It is you!

Our 600 students are the reasons why we do what we do every day!  We are preparing them for their future and post secondary success!  They are the reason why we will increase our rigor, use research based strategies for our ELL kids, and have them write every day in class.  This is a hard and complicated job – if you are working here it is because you want to make a difference!  You are doing that – we heard it in the kids’ videos!

So, in response to not meeting Index 3 – we are going to do whatever it takes to meet Index 3 and continue to improve the overall achievement of our students.

Thank you to the Campus Leadership Team for their work to prepare and present our Plan for the next three months.  We have three Problem Statements, Goals, Strategies, and ways to monitor that will take place through January.  At the end of each month, the CLT will meet to examine the evidence towards achievement of the 3 month goal.  They will report to you our progress as well.  Everyone’s role is to use the strategies that have been identified to move us to our goal.  Over the next 3 months, we also will have some PD during faculty meetings and conference periods to further our understanding and implementation of the identified strategies.  Here are our 3 goals:
1.  The use of Balanced Literacy (ELA teachers), ESL strategies (all teachers), and purposeful planning – increase STAAR achievement across the board for all content tests and all students.
2.  Writing in all content areas every day.
3.  Planning rigorous and high level levels for students
This is just a short summary of our plan – Our first check for improvement will be at the end of November –

Department Meetings this week:  At the core department meetings this week will be the first opportunity to use the Critical Friends Protocol and look at student writing.  Since this is one of our areas of focus and growth – this will be an important part of improving our writing instruction and the students’ achievement in writing.  Department Chairs – please email your department and find out who would like to be the presenter of their student work on Wednesday.  Whoever volunteers will need to have writing samples available for the department to look at to give feedback.

Important:  Carol Salva will be here tomorrow – Monday – in B117 (Lesli’s office) and all teachers need to meet with Carol during their conference period.  Carol is going to do a PD on grading ELL students.  So – if you have ELL students in your classes – you need to attend.
